However, what most people don’t realize is that gum pigmentation can actually be more harmful than the discoloration on your teeth itself. What is gum pigmentation, you may ask? Gum pigmentation refers to the dark spots or splotches that appear around your gums and are caused by iron deficiency in your body.

Gum bleaching is how dentists would try to remove gum pigmentation in the past — the keyword there being tried. Using painful lasers, dentists would literally burn away an entire layer of gum tissue in the hopes of getting rid of the dark patches on your gums. However, now there are new and improved ways to avoid this expensive, time-consuming process that could damage your gums even more. Ethnic pigmentation is just a name for these dark patches on your gums that needn’t be anything to worry about.
Luckily, ethnic pigmentation doesn’t cause any discomfort or affect your oral health whatsoever — it can simply be ignored if you so choose.

What Causes These Dark Patches On My Gums?

Gum bleaching is a treatment that dentists can offer to people with dark patches on their gums. Ethnic pigmentation is caused by melanin, which is a pigment that occurs naturally in skin and hair. When your body reacts to certain substances, such as tobacco, this pigment may appear more prominently on your gums. Both treatments can be painful, but only gum bleaching uses lasers to try to remove those dark patches.

So What Can Be Done About It?

In response to the demand for a better way to remove ethnic pigmentation, some dentists are now turning to lasers that can break up brown spots in gums without damaging surrounding tissue. These lasers target dark areas with light pulses so focused that they don’t spread out beyond their target area. As it turns out, this technique is also less painful than trying to burn away an entire layer of skin.

Laser Treatment:

In order to remove these stains, dentists will first use a laser to remove the top layer of the skin. They will then apply liquid nitrogen in order to freeze any residual pigment before making a second pass with the laser. Patients may experience some pain during this process, but it is only for a few seconds each time. The procedure generally takes about 10 minutes per tooth surface area.


The process of bleaching your teeth can be done in two different ways, using either a chemical or a laser. When using the chemical method, hydrogen peroxide is used to break down stains caused by bacteria. It does this by oxidizing things like iron in hemoglobin (the red pigment in blood), turning it into rust that can be scrubbed away. The downside to this process is that it often wears away at tooth enamel, which can lead to sensitivity, so patients will have to use a desensitizing mouthwash or gel after treatment. Chemical teeth whitening also only lasts for a short time before fading back up to its original color.
